About Backup Media

Backup Media is a service that offers a physical version of download products to shoppers in the shopping cart. Backup Media discs (CD or DVD) are burned on-demand, eliminating the cost associated with maintaining a physical inventory.

Backup Media allows you to provide your shoppers the option of a physical product for their download purchases while providing you a unique marketing and branding opportunity with the Backup Media disc itself.

What is a Configuration?

Backup Media Configurations are the artwork and setup you want to be used with Backup Media orders. You can create as many configurations as needed and localize them for your store. You can also create configurations that are targeted to shoppers who purchase specific products, or use the same configuration for purchases of all your products.

General Configurations

A general Backup Media configuration is a configuration that is used for all purchases of Backup Media on your store. This means that any sale of Backup Media on your site will use the mass market configuration you create, unless you also create a targeted configuration for specific products on your site.

Targeted Configurations

A targeted Backup Media configuration is a configuration that is only used when a specific product is purchased. This allows you to target your shoppers based on what they purchase, allowing you to target your shoppers in unique ways and provide them with trial software that reflects or enhances their purchase.

Best Practice for Creating Configurations

There are several guidelines you should follow when creating a configuration (either general or targeted):

How are Configurations Chosen During Checkout?

If shoppers purchase more than one product and choose to purchase Backup Media as well, the store will arbitrate which configuration should be used based on some specific rules. See Understanding How Configurations are Chosen for more information.
