About the Product Template

The Product Template is used to define which settings, attributes, locales, tax categories, and platform options appear when you create or edit a product. The Product Template is configured per company so the setup will be used by used by all sites/stores within your company.

The Product Template has settings for both the Individual Product template and the Multiple Product template. This means you can customize what appears for individual products, and what appears for multiple products with variations. For more about individual and multiple products, see About Individual Products and About Multiple Products with Variations.

Note: To have your Product Template configured so that creating and editing products is more efficient, contact your Store Operations team. They can help you determine what changes should be made and do the set up for you (the Product Template feature is only available to internal users).

Hiding and Showing Settings

When you are creating or editing products, the settings you can select for the product are determined by what is set to be "visible" in the product template. If a certain setting doesn’t appear in the Product Wizard or Product Editor, it means the product template has been set up to hide that particular item. To learn which settings can be controlled by the product template, see Localizing Products.

Each setting that you can enable for a product has specific attributes that are used to define that product. The product template can be used to hide specific attributes that you don’t use or need for your store. A common example of this is with the "Download" setting. There are many attributes that can be set for download products but most attributes are not

Default Selections for New Products

The product template is also used to determine which settings are selected by default when you first create a product. You can change the template so that a certain setting (such as the specific fulfillment method) is selected by default for new products. This can make creating new products easier and faster because it reduces the number of steps you have to take to complete your product.

Locales and Platform Options

The product template also allows you to set which locales and platform options appear for your company. Hiding the locales you don’t support is an easy way to speed up the creation process as the Product Wizard doesn’t have to load data for locales you will never used. We highly recommend you talk to your Store Operations team about how you can use the locale settings in the product template to improve the efficiency of the Product Editor.

Product Template and Import and Export Products

The Product Template affects what settings and options you see when you create or edit products in the Command Console. Similarly, the Import and Export Product Spreadsheet Template affects what settings and options you see when you create or edit products using the Import and Export spreadsheets.

We strongly recommended that any configuration done to the Product Template also be done to the Product Import and Export Spreadsheet template (see Configuring the Import and Export Product Spreadsheet. This will make the fields in the UI match the fields that appear in the spreadsheet. This will reduce confusion and possible configuration errors with products that are created or editing using both methods.

To learn more about using Import and Export Products, see About Import and Export Products.

Default Values

You can set up the default values that are used when you create a new product. The Default Values feature can be helpful if you know that most or all of your products will have a specific attribute. To learn more about the Default Values feature, contact your Store Operations team.
